Down and Out

If one of us isn't home when 'Rad goes down for bed, Z and I talk about his bedtime routine as if Connor were in a retirement home.  "How was he?"  "Did he fight it?"  "How is he doing?"  We ask each other these questions quietly in the evening, knocking on wood as we utter the words.  I have taken to leaving my answers somewhat open-ended, functioning on the belief that if I say something with too positively it won't come true.  To any of the above questions I answer simply, "He's ok for now" or "He was fine" for fear that the fates will hear anything but uncertainty and feel the need to put me in my place.

For the past couple of days 'Rad has taken to picking the food up off of his tray and throwing it on the floor while looking straight at us.  Little jerk.  Pears, strawberries, cheerios, tofu - they all end up dog fodder or gently resting on the kitchen chair next to his high chair.  He'll happily take food off a spoon when fed to him, but for some reason finger foods make him angry.  Maybe he had a run in with some produce that I was never told about.  There was one day that he came home with a bruise I never asked about...

With the weather being so unbearably hot and all of us being stuck inside in the a/c (and going crazy), we have had to come up with ways to keep each other amused.  These are some of the distractions we came up with this weekend:

Homemade train car.  Ingredients: empty beer box, dog tug-of-war toy for a handle, willing baby.

The good ol' piggyback ride.  It's a winner every time.

Last Friday I went out to see Magic Mike with a girlfriend.  This was a momentous occasion because it was the first time I've been to a movie in the theater since having 'Rad.  It was the first time I've been to a movie, just a girl friend and I, since moving to Wisconsin.  It was the first time I've seen a "chick flick" on the big screen since I don't know when.  It was the harbinger of a lot of firsts and it was a completely guilty pleasure.  Sure, I was a little uncomfortable watching those male strippers gyrate (particularly the scene where Dallas and The Kid work it in front of the mirror), and maybe I giggled like a school girl at parts, but it was fun to be in a theater full of (mostly) women as if we were all actually at the strip club.  I don't really want to be in a strip club, though.  Honestly.  I'm being completely serious.  Stop looking at me like that!

I haven't been to a movie yet, and it's been almost a year since I've had my daughter. I'm so jealous. I'm going to plan one very soon. I can't decide between Ted, Magic Mike, or the new Batman. What to make my return with????

If you want to go all-out indulgence, go for Mike. I think it's an appropriate flick for returning to the fold of mothers who leave the house without their babies (once in a while). Although, I'd love to see your other two movies, too!
